| The electric car from 2009 |
I found it difficult being a leader when a few people refused to return for a second year because they didn't want a girl telling them what to do, and how to do it. It was disheartening to know this, and I considered giving up my position, but instead kept it to try and overcome that challenge. I managed to accomplish this with few other difficulties. It became more fun after that point, I made friends and was actually looked up to, which felt really good and boosted my self esteem.
We managed to get the car built and running this last summer, it was a lot of fun. We clocked the car at about 30 miles per hour. This was running off of two twelve volt car batteries, and a motor. There were no brakes (one of the parts left on the to-do list). We unfortunately didn't make the deadline for the race, but we did make it drivable by the time I left to come to ISU. It made me feel very proud and I think I was at my best at that point.

This is really cool that your school gets to actually make a car. My school never does this. I am glad to hear that you didn't give up just because people quit because there was a girl leader. Congrats on all of your sucess!
ReplyDeleteYeah I have always wanted to build a car! But yeah way to stick with it with the setbacks and good job!
ReplyDeletePretty cool story. I would imaginge it felt pretty good seeing success even in the midst of adversity.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I really wish my school did something like this. I would have loved to work with an electric car. Anyways, I think that it is impressive that you took over that team and made it your own. Even though you didn't make the deadline for the race, it was still drivable before you came to Iowa State. That is good for starting fresh and using your own philosophy.
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet!! Our school never had anything like that either! I give you props for being the leader of that group, it really shows your expertise on the construction of things. I'm impressed! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteI also would have loved to have this opportunity at my high school. That would be an awesome experience and I would have loved to get involoved with a program like that. Its kind of sad that people wouldn't return because there was a female in a leader position, I wonder if they will be doing the same when looking for a job?
ReplyDeleteAwesome! looks like you did a lot to help your team succeed :) Our school had a really awesome robotics club but i never felt smart enough to join :/.
ReplyDeleteOk couple of things 1. That thing is awesome 2. Congrats on becoming the team leader 3. I think it was dumb for those people not to return because you were a girl, it depends on how well you can lead not what gender you are 4. That thing is awesome and 5. Congratulations on your awesome electric car :)
